The News-2-You staff is buzzing with anticipation. We have been introduced to an amazing athlete, long (and I do mean "long") distance runner Charlie Engle. Charlie is training to break a world record for a transcontinental run across America. He is also running to combat childhood obesity. He will begin in San Francisco in June and end in New York City around July or August. And we want News-2-You readers to play a part in that run.

Charlie loves what we do (his father was a special education teacher) and wants to interact with as many of the N2Y gang as he can. Welcome to the new “Run America” area of our website. Charlie’s planned route across the country is shown above. You can use this area to track his daily progress.

We also want to encourage your active participation as well. We have promised Charlie some enthusiastic support from some very special fans. Here’s the plan. We anticipate identifying special News-2-You meeting sites along the route (a Home Depot or perhaps a Lowes). News-2-You readers and their teachers could assemble there to meet Charlie, pose for pictures or perhaps even “run” a short distance with him. News-2-You will even distribute free tee-shirts celebrating the occasion. We are still in the planning stages, but you can expect more details as they become available.

The national media will be tracking this run. Charlie already has interviews scheduled with the Today Show and Oprah! Unfortunately the majority of the run will occur during the summer break, but we are still hopeful that we can generate some participation by News-2-You families and, if possible, by entire classes. (We will announce those cities and the entire route as soon as we receive it from Charlie. As he puts it, “News-2-You is at the very top of my radar.”) Stay tuned. This can--and will--be a fun-filled opportunity to meet a real newsmaker and a truly impressive individual.

2. Become a News-2-You T-Shirt Captain: News-2-You is looking for key people at each of the stops. (The stops will be announced shortly.) These key people will help us by distributing t-shirts on the day that Charlie is stopping in their area.

There are many more ways you can help. We are also open to any ideas you may have.
