What?
News-2-You® is a family-run business started by Jacquie Clark, a speech-language
pathologist with over 30 years experience. The current events newspaper began as a
weekly classroom project utilizing concise, symbol-supported text to deliver current
events news to a population previously denied this information. Today, News-2-You®
provides subscribers with over 180 pages each week, including news, activities, computer
games and storybooks, all related to the feature story of the week.
Each News-2-You® subscription gives you:
- Current events newspaper universally designed for its readers. Each week the Internet newspaper delivers reader-friendly, relevant news to an enthusiastic subscriber base.
- Four levels of reading comprehension (Simplified, Regular, Higher and Advanced Editions).
- Two communication boards (Simplified and Regular).
- Speaking versions of all three newspaper editions.
- Spanish translation of the Regular Edition newspaper and Comboard.
- Activity sheets in two levels. Each sheet uses the vocabulary from the newspaper to address academic goals/standards.
- "Joey's Locker" section featuring interactive computer games, cartoons and storybooks.
- World News section featuring 2-3 page late-breaking news stories from around the world. (Use Google Maps to zoom in on the specific geographic locale of each story.) World News allows News-2-You® to track a wide variety of news stories not included in the weekly editions.
News-2-You® connects the classroom to the world. It’s a connection that spurs learning
and increases communication. Our news stories provide stimulating new information on
reader-friendly themes. Our subscribers come from all levels of special education (preschool
to adult education), regular education (preschool to 4th grades) and ESL classrooms (preschool
to adult). Each newspaper is ready to use. No software to learn. No extra prep work
required. Just download and build your lesson plans around the material. It’s all there!
News-2-You® is perfect for AAC users. Its new information is guaranteed to stir
student interest and enthusiasm. Look for a dramatic increase in speech initiation and real
interactions.
News-2-You®’s curriculum is standards/IEP-oriented. It is being used globally to
achieve (and measure) communication and academic goals.
News-2-You® bonds families with the classroom. Students are eager to share what they
have learned with parents, siblings and friends.
Will Rogers said it best: “All I know is what I read in the newspaper.” News-2-You®
is your/our newspaper. Expose your classroom to current events. It will be an enriching
experience.
Why?
Everyone needs ready access to sources of "new information". It's the content that makes
our conversations interesting and meaningful and sparks learning. All individuals have a
right to this information, not just for those of us who are able to decipher the
content-intensive formats regularly used in newspapers and on newscasts. News-2-You®
is universally designed for individuals who need concise, visual concepts. It provides
"big picture" news to a population previously denied that information. It provides fun and
motivating reading material.
When?
News-2-You® is produced weekly and follows a production schedule which mirrors the school
year calendar. The first issue is published the first week in September, with the final issue
delivered the first week in June. (No newspapers will be printed during the two-week Winter
holiday.) The paper for the next week is put online on the Thursday prior. The weekly
production schedule gives teachers advanced information for lesson planning. There are two
papers online - the current week's paper and the previous week's paper.
New in 2007: 3 full editions online during the summer – one each in June, July
and August for a total of 41 editions being published annually!
